Russell Okung’s weight loss transformation has been attracting attention recently after he shared a post on his Instagram profile, displaying his remarkable achievement. The image posted on Sunday afternoon shows his weight loss transformation after being away from football for two-plus years.
Okung is a two-time Pro Bowl left tackle who retired from the NFL following the 2020 season. In 2018, Okung was with the Los Angeles Chargers, and his listed playing weight was 310 pounds.
After retiring, Okung followed in the footsteps of Joe Thomas, a now-Hall of Fame left tackle who also displayed dramatic weight loss after his playing days.
Offensive linemen depend heavily on body mass and strength to perform their jobs, which often requires them to adopt unhealthy eating habits and consume a high number of calories.
Thomas revealed in a 2019 GQ interview that his breakfast previously consisted of oatmeal, Greek yogurt, berries, granola, flax seed, honey, 8-10 scrambled eggs, and 4-5 pieces of bacon.
Before two more substantial meals, a pre-lunch snack that may have been a “high-calorie smoothie,” a pre-lunch snack of “a sleeve of Girl Scout cookies and a bowl of ice cream, or sometimes a freezer pizza in the oven, and a big casein protein shake before bed with some milk, all of that was consumed.
Although Okung did not provide such detailed information in his post, it’s reasonable to assume that he was consuming a similar calorie-dense diet, which he has since abandoned now that he no longer has to block Von Miller. The “Reborn” caption on his post suggests that Okung is pleased with the changes he has made.
